Semilla Nueva is inviting applications from qualified and experienced professionals for the position of Philanthropy Manager, Effective Giving.
The successful candidate will build and manage relationships with effective altruism (EA) and impact-focused funders, including foundations, major donors, donor-advised funds, and donor advisors.
The role is focused on philanthropy, cost-effectiveness analysis, global health and development, agriculture, nutrition, impact evaluation, and evidence-based giving.

About Semilla Nueva
Semilla Nueva develops maize seeds designed to reduce malnutrition, increase farmer income, and withstand climate shocks.
The organization works with seed companies, governments, and social enterprises to make these seeds accessible to farmers in countries where maize is an important part of the food system.
Its goal is to improve the nutrition of more than one billion people who consume maize daily in some of the world’s most malnourished countries.
The Philanthropy Manager will play an important role in developing the philanthropic partnerships required to expand this work.
Job Overview
The Philanthropy Manager, Effective Giving will focus on cultivating relationships with funders who assess philanthropic opportunities using cost-effectiveness, evidence, marginal impact, and counterfactual reasoning.
The successful candidate will need to communicate credibly with highly analytical donors and funders, understand quantitative impact models, and confidently discuss the evidence supporting Semilla Nueva’s programs.
The position will work closely with development, program, and finance teams to ensure that impact claims, cost-effectiveness analyses, and donor-facing materials are accurate, current, and defensible.
Key Responsibilities
Fundraising and Relationship Management
The Philanthropy Manager will:
- Identify and build relationships across the effective altruism and impact-focused funding ecosystem.
- Engage aligned foundations and major donors.
- Develop relationships with donor-advised funds and donor advisors.
- Build relationships with funders who prioritize evidence and cost-effectiveness.
- Own and grow a portfolio of funder relationships.
- Work with the Director of Development to establish annual revenue and pipeline goals.
- Cultivate and onboard new funders.
- Tailor engagement strategies to analytical and evidence-focused funders.
- Build long-term trust with sophisticated donors.
Cost-Effectiveness and Impact Analysis
The successful candidate will:
- Serve as a credible thought partner to analytical funders.
- Discuss Semilla Nueva’s cost-effectiveness analyses with funders.
- Explain data sources and analytical methods.
- Discuss assumptions used in impact models.
- Explain impact and cost projections.
- Engage substantively with questions about program effectiveness.
- Help communicate evidence supporting the organization’s impact.
- Work with program and finance teams to ensure impact claims remain evidence-based.
- Support the development and review of impact metrics and cost-effectiveness analyses.
Funder Communications
The position will involve:
- Preparing funder-facing memos.
- Developing presentations and donor decks.
- Preparing donor reports.
- Producing evidence-based materials for analytical funders.
- Translating complex quantitative research into accessible donor-facing content.
- Ensuring communications meet the analytical standards expected by the target funding community.
- Occasionally contributing to underlying impact models.
Portfolio and CRM Management
The Philanthropy Manager will:
- Track donor engagement.
- Monitor funding commitments.
- Track reporting requirements.
- Maintain accurate information in the organization’s CRM.
- Manage the funder relationship pipeline.
- Ensure timely follow-up with donors and funders.
Sector Knowledge and External Representation
The successful candidate will:
- Stay informed about developments in the effective altruism community.
- Follow major discussions and frameworks in global health and development funding.
- Monitor developments in cost-effectiveness and impact evaluation.
- Represent Semilla Nueva’s impact and cost-effectiveness work externally.
- Participate in conferences, webinars, and funder convenings.
- Help strengthen the organization’s visibility and credibility among impact-focused funders.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have:
- At least 3 years of experience in fundraising, grantmaking, impact evaluation, research, or a related analytical role.
- Familiarity with the global health and development cost-effectiveness landscape.
- Knowledge of major evaluators in the global health and development space.
- Fluency in effective altruism concepts.
- Understanding of cost-effectiveness reasoning.
- Familiarity with concepts such as:
- Cost per outcome
- DALYs
- Counterfactual impact
- Moral weights
- Multiples of cash
- Ability to engage with quantitative impact models.
- Ability to discuss methodologies and assumptions credibly.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Excellent oral communication skills.
- Ability to communicate with rigorous, evidence-oriented audiences.
- Strong relationship-building abilities.
- Ability to build trust with sophisticated donors.

- Track record of securing or advising on six-figure or larger gifts.
- Experience translating complex quantitative research into original donor-facing content.
- Experience planning donor site visits.
- Existing networks within the effective altruism or impact-focused funding community.
Travel Requirements
The role involves some travel.
Candidates based in an effective altruism hub should expect approximately 10% travel.
Candidates based outside an EA hub may be expected to travel approximately 30% of the time.
