ALU Full Scholarships for January 2027

African Leadership University (ALU) Rwanda has opened applications for its January 2027 intake, offering eligible students an opportunity to pursue undergraduate studies with access to full scholarships, tuition grants, and other financial aid opportunities.

The scholarships are designed to support academically strong, purpose-driven young people who demonstrate financial need, leadership potential, community engagement, and a commitment to creating positive impact in Africa and beyond.

Scholarship Opportunities

1. Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program provides full-ride scholarships to eligible students who demonstrate financial need and strong potential.

Depending on the scholarship terms and partner funding, successful scholars may receive:

• Full tuition coverage
• Living allowance
• Laptop provision
• Flight ticket
• Additional financial support
• Leadership development programmes
• Mentorship opportunities
• Networking opportunities with organizations and industry leaders

The programme particularly encourages applications from young people facing significant financial and socio-economic barriers.

2. Mandela Scholarships

Mandela Scholarships provide tuition support for the duration of the degree programme.

The available annual awards include:

• USD 3,000 per year for Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurial Leadership (BSc EL)
• USD 3,000 per year for Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering (BSE)
• USD 4,000 per year for BSc (Hons) International Business and Trade (IBT)

Applicants for Mandela Scholarships are expected to demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership, initiative, integrity, resilience, and entrepreneurial thinking.

Important: Mandela Scholarship recipients should be financially prepared to cover accommodation, meals, and other living expenses that are not covered by the tuition award.

3. ALU Tuition Grants

ALU Grants provide tuition fee waivers to students who demonstrate financial need.

The grants:

• Cover part of tuition fees
• Apply for the minimum duration of the degree
• Do not have to be repaid
• Cannot be redeemed for cash
• Do not cover other costs associated with attending ALU

There are limited financial-aid slots available for each intake, so meeting the eligibility criteria does not automatically guarantee an award.

Eligibility Requirements

Admission Requirements

Applicants should:

• Have completed secondary education at A-Level or an equivalent qualification.
• Have passed at least three A-Level subjects or equivalent, including at least one core subject.
• Provide an equivalency certificate where applicable.
• Demonstrate English proficiency at a minimum B2 level, or take ALU’s free English Proficiency Test.

Scholarship Requirements

For financial aid, applicants generally need to:

• Demonstrate verified financial need.
• Be 26 years old or younger.
• Demonstrate strong academic performance.
• Show leadership potential.
• Be actively involved in their communities.
• Demonstrate a commitment to creating positive social impact.

For Mastercard Foundation scholarships, applicants must demonstrate both financial need/socio-economic disadvantage and strong academic potential. Strong National Examination results, with scores of at least B, are highlighted among the scholarship criteria.

The programme particularly encourages eligible young women, refugees and displaced individuals, and individuals with physical or learning disabilities to apply.

Required Documents

Applicants should prepare:

• High school diploma or equivalent certificate
• Academic transcripts for Grades 10, 11 and 12
• National ID or passport
• Personal statement
• Proof of English proficiency
• Parent/guardian bank or Mobile Money statements for the last three months
• Parent/guardian employment confirmation letter
• Annual high school tuition fee document
• Sponsorship documents, where applicable
• Death certificate of a parent, where applicable

Applicants seeking financial aid should ensure that their financial documents clearly demonstrate their household’s financial circumstances.

How to Apply

The application process generally involves three main stages:

Stage 1: Introduction

Complete the online application form with your personal information.

Stage 2: Additional Information

Provide academic and personal information and upload the required supporting documents.

Stage 3: Finances

Complete the Education Financing section. The information provided will be used to assess your financial contribution and eligibility for available financial aid.
