Call for Applications: Reporting on Literacy & Numeracy in Africa
A significant learning crisis continues to affect children across sub-Saharan Africa, where an estimated 9 out of 10 children are unable to read with comprehension or perform basic mathematics by the age of 10. While research has identified effective strategies to improve learning outcomes and political commitment is gradually increasing, large-scale implementation of these solutions remains limited. Strengthening public awareness through impactful journalism is therefore essential.
To address this gap, ICFJ+ is inviting applications from journalists and content creators based in Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa to participate in a specialized initiative focused on foundational literacy and numeracy reporting.
About the Program
This initiative aims to equip selected participants with the necessary knowledge, skills, and professional networks to produce data-driven and solutions-oriented stories on education.
Up to 15 fellows will be selected to benefit from:
- Reporting grants
- One-on-one mentorship
- Story production support over a 6-month period
- Training on education data and pedagogy
- Opportunities for study tours
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be:
- Journalists working with a media outlet, freelancers, or content creators (including social media influencers)
- Based in Kenya, Senegal, or South Africa
- Able to submit applications in English or French
What Makes a Strong Application?
Competitive candidates will demonstrate:
- Experience or interest in reporting on education, social policy, or development
- A clear understanding of gaps in current coverage of foundational learning in their country
- A commitment to producing impactful stories that reach policymakers, educators, and affected communities
