About the Teaching Assistant Role
The Teaching Assistants will support the delivery of courses while working closely with course faculty. The position combines academic support and course administration.
Teaching Assistants will also have defined assessment responsibilities, including grading formative assignments and assessing student participation in discussions, simulations and case-based activities.
Key Responsibilities
Assessment and Instructional Support
The Teaching Assistant will:
- Grade reflection papers, exercises, quizzes, drafts and presentations using faculty-approved rubrics.
- Score and document student engagement and participation.
- Assess performance during simulations, role plays and case conversations.
- Facilitate small-group discussions and case sessions under faculty supervision.
- Coordinate assignment collection and submission tracking.
- Ensure timely return of feedback.
- Maintain compliance with academic integrity procedures.
Class and Online Session Coordination
Responsibilities include:
- Setting up and testing online session links.
- Preparing group formations, breakout rooms, polls and presentation materials.
- Joining classes at least 20 minutes before they begin.
- Checking faculty audio, video, slides and connectivity.
- Managing authorized participant access and attendance.
- Monitoring chat, raised hands and breakout activities.
- Providing immediate technical assistance during live classes.
- Managing recordings according to institutional policy.
- Uploading approved learning materials after sessions.
Learning Management System Administration
The successful candidates will:
- Maintain module pages on Canvas.
- Update course outlines, readings, announcements, assignments, rubrics and resources.
- Verify links, files, deadlines and student access permissions.
- Administer online quizzes and assessments.
- Maintain accurate grade, attendance and participation records.
Student and Faculty Support
Duties also include:
- Serving as the first point of contact for student course-logistics questions.
- Escalating academic or personal concerns appropriately.
- Helping prepare slides, handouts, case packs and discussion materials.
- Conducting research as directed by faculty.
- Preparing reports on attendance, engagement and technical issues.
- Coordinating guest-speaker logistics and field engagement arrangements when assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential Requirements
Applicants must have a postgraduate degree in a discipline relevant to one of the following streams:
TA-1
Relevant fields include:
- Law
- Humanities
- Natural Resource Governance
- Migration Studies
- Trade and Regional Integration
- Development Studies
- Governance
TA-2
Relevant fields include:
- Political Science
- History
- African Studies
- Governance
- Political Economy
Applicants must also have at least two years of experience as a Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant or in another academic support role.
Additional Skills and Competencies
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Strong digital and technical competency.
- Experience with learning management systems, with Canvas preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Experience with virtual classroom and collaboration platforms.
- Excellent written and oral communication.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to coordinate mixed-delivery classrooms concurrently.

Contract and Remuneration
The position is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for one year, renewable depending on performance and programme requirements.
The position is based in Kigali, Rwanda, with residential, weekend and evening commitments required from time to time.
ASG states that remuneration will be a competitive monthly lump sum based on the position and the candidate’s qualifications. The vacancy does not provide a specific salary figure.
