Job Purpose
The Staff Product Designer will partner closely with the Network Features team to design and improve some of Tailscale’s most technically sophisticated products. The role focuses on transforming complex networking concepts into intuitive experiences for network engineers, IT administrators, and developers.
The successful candidate will lead design discovery, influence product strategy, and create solutions that simplify networking, routing, security, and infrastructure management at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Define design priorities across network features and infrastructure products
- Lead discovery and research on complex and ambiguous product challenges
- Translate technical systems into understandable design frameworks
- Create diagrams, system maps, and design artifacts that support decision-making
- Design end-to-end experiences across graphical user interfaces (GUI) and command-line interfaces (CLI)
- Collaborate closely with engineering and product management teams
- Develop solutions for networking, traffic routing, DNS, subnet routing, exit nodes, and related services
- Drive product direction through user research and behavioral insights
- Improve design quality and product thinking across the broader organization
- Support implementation, testing, and quality assurance activities
- Explore opportunities to integrate AI-assisted experiences into technical products
- Contribute to design processes, standards, and best practices
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants should possess:
- Minimum of 10 years of product design experience
- Experience operating at Staff Designer level or equivalent scope
- Strong portfolio demonstrating work on technical B2B, infrastructure, or enterprise products
- Experience leading product discovery and strategic design initiatives
- Strong understanding of user-centered design methodologies
- Ability to influence product strategy and roadmap decisions
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Experience working in distributed and remote environments
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are considered an advantage:
- Experience using Tailscale products
- Knowledge of networking technologies including DNS, VPNs, proxies, and traffic routing
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or DigitalOcean
- Experience designing products for developers, system administrators, or IT professionals
- Familiarity with behavioral analytics and experimentation frameworks
- Experience integrating AI tools into product design workflows
