Conclave elects American Robert Prevost as new pope
BREAKING NEWS: American Robert Prevost Elected as New Pope, Takes Name Leo XIV
White smoke has risen from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling the election of a new pope. After two days of deliberation, the College of Cardinals has chosen American-born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 268th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He will take the papal name Pope Leo XIV.
In a historic move, Prevost becomes one of the few Americans ever considered for the papacy and the first to be elected to the role. His election comes after 133 cardinals from across the globe convened in secret, casting their ballots under strict conclave rules, with no communication with the outside world.
Pope Leo XIV now steps into leadership over 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, amid calls for reform, renewal, and unity within the Church.
