Scholarship Benefits
The full AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship covers:
- Full tuition
- Room and board
- Other billable expenses charged by American University.
- Renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study, subject to satisfactory academic performance.
The scholarship does not cover certain non-billable expenses such as health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes, and miscellaneous expenses. American University estimates these additional expenses at approximately US$4,000 per year.
In addition, American University offers up to eight partial AU EGL scholarships worth up to US$40,000 per year.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants should:
- Be an international student who will require a non-immigrant visa, preferably an F-1 or J-1 visa.
- Be applying for first-year undergraduate admission at American University.
- Demonstrate strong academic achievement.
- Show commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service, and positive civic or social change.
- Demonstrate commitment to addressing challenges affecting underserved or under-resourced communities in their home country.
- Meet American University’s English proficiency requirements.
- Be graduating from secondary/high school within the eligible period specified by American University.
Applicants Are Not Eligible If:
- They are a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, pending permanent resident, or dual U.S./another-country citizen.
- They have already started post-secondary studies at another university.
- They graduated from secondary school outside the eligible graduation period.
Application Procedure
Interested students should follow these steps:
- Complete the Common Application for first-year admission to American University.
- Submit all required supporting documents before the scholarship deadline.
- Create and access your American University applicant portal after receiving the invitation.
- Complete the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship application and essays through the applicant portal.
- Submit a bank letter and completed AU Declaration of Finances (AU DFF) showing a minimum of US$4,000.
- Submit official English proficiency test results such as TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, PTE, or Cambridge Assessment English, where required.
- Applicants selected as semi-finalists or finalists may be required to participate in interviews and/or submit additional essays.
Important: The scholarship application is a two-step process. Students must first submit the Common Application and required admission documents, then complete the separate AU EGL scholarship application through the applicant portal.
