About the Fleet Mechanic Position
The successful candidate will be responsible for keeping DSSU’s fleet safe, reliable, roadworthy and operational.
The fleet consists of approximately 38 units, including:
- 8 Sinotruk trucks
- 1 motor grader
- 1 compactor
- 28 light vehicles
The mechanic will help reduce breakdowns and downtime through preventive maintenance, early fault detection and timely repairs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Vehicle and Equipment Inspection
The mechanic will:
- Conduct regular mechanical inspections.
- Perform daily/pre-trip and periodic technical inspections.
- Identify mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults.
- Assess vehicle and equipment conditions and recommend repairs.
- Inspect vehicles after breakdowns, accidents or abnormal performance.
- Identify and report safety-critical defects.
2. Preventive Maintenance
Responsibilities include:
- Scheduled servicing according to manufacturer recommendations.
- Oil and filter changes.
- Lubrication and fluid checks.
- Brake and battery inspections.
- Belt and cooling-system checks.
- Monitoring mileage and engine-hour service intervals.
- Replacing worn components before major failures occur.
3. Heavy Equipment Maintenance
The mechanic will provide hands-on maintenance and repair support for:
- Sinotruk heavy trucks
- Motor graders
- Compactors
This includes engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, cooling systems and tyres.
Where specialist repairs are required, the mechanic will identify the need for an external workshop or authorized dealer and provide the necessary technical information.
4. Electrical and Diagnostic Work
The role also involves:
- Diagnosing basic vehicle electrical faults.
- Checking batteries, alternators and starters.
- Inspecting lighting systems, wiring and fuses.
- Using appropriate diagnostic equipment.
- Interpreting diagnostic results.
- Keeping up with modern vehicle electronic systems.
5. Tyres, Lubricants and Consumables
The mechanic will inspect tyre wear, damage and pressure and recommend replacements where necessary.
They will also monitor:
- Engine oil
- Transmission fluid
- Coolant
- Brake fluid
- Hydraulic oil
- Other lubricants
- Spare parts and workshop consumables
6. Workshop and External Repair Coordination
Duties include maintaining a safe and organized workshop, correctly using tools and equipment, recording repairs and parts used, and technically monitoring external garage repairs when required.
Vehicles must also be inspected after external repairs before returning to service.
7. Maintenance Records and Reporting
Records should cover:
- Service dates
- Mileage and engine hours
- Repairs performed
- Spare parts used
- Breakdown history
- Tyre replacements
- Oil and filter changes
- Major component replacements
- Outstanding mechanical defects
- Vehicle downtime
8. Driver and Operator Support
The mechanic will provide technical guidance to drivers and equipment operators, including advice on daily vehicle checks, vehicle care and practices that reduce unnecessary wear, damage and fuel consumption.

- At least 3 years of practical experience as a motor vehicle or heavy equipment mechanic.
- Demonstrated experience servicing and repairing diesel trucks and heavy equipment.
- Experience with Sinotruk, Howo or similar heavy-duty trucks is highly desirable.
- Experience with motor graders, compactors or similar construction/road-maintenance equipment is an important advantage.
- Experience maintaining Toyota, Volkswagen, Corolla vehicles and pickup trucks.
- Experience with vehicle electrical systems and electronic diagnostics.
- Experience in a fleet, workshop, construction, road maintenance, transport or similar operational environment.
